This segment from the April 15, 2011, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s report on the Vietnamese fishing community one year after the BP Oil Spill. The Vietnamese community in Louisiana makes up one-third of all of the fishermen in the Gulf of Mexico. Whinham talks to fishermen in Chalmette about the difficult shrimp harvest. He also interviews May Nguyen of the Mary Queen of Vietnam Community Development Center in New Orleans about the frustrations of fishermen, their distrust of Kenneth Feinberg and the Gulf Coast Claims Facility (GCCF), and her efforts to have the GCCF pay subsistence claims to the fishermen.
