This segment from the April 17, 1998, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Jeff Duhe reporting on the fourth and final week of the 1998 Special Session of the Louisiana Legislature. These stories include: State Representatives Troy Hebert and Raymond Jetson debating a bill enacting criminal fines for people under age 21 who play video poker or the Lottery; interviews with Speaker of the House Hunt Downer and Senate President Randy Ewing on the education bills passed at the session; and State Senator John Hainkel, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, expressing his concerns about the growth of the state budget. Host Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with Jackie Ducote, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (PAR), and Stephanie Desselle of the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL). They discuss the passage of a constitutional amendment creating the Louisiana Community and Technical College System and the changes to the TOPS Scholarship program.
