Description
This segment from the January 31, 1992, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Jeff Duhe’s report on the economic uncertainty and shrinking job market in Alexandria and central Louisiana. His report touches on the local reaction to President George Bush’s State of the Union Address. It also includes highlights of a press conference with Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, a Democratic presidential candidate, discussing his plans to deal with the economy during a visit to Baton Rouge. Duhe interviews: Beverly Duplechin, Rose Gerchow, and Jeanne Sheppard, Manna House volunteers; Jerry Cooper, Claudia Melbert, Jackie Quitt, Vivian Lair, Vanessa Russhaw, Victor White, Dorothy Brown, and Cornelius Martin, Manna House recipients; Mike Guinn, the manager of Caplan’s; Charles D’Amico, businessman; and Stanley Bohrer of Noah’s Chips. Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with Harold Price, the assistant secretary at the Louisiana Department of Economic Development, and Dr. Jim Richardson, economist and member of the Revenue Estimating Conference. They discuss: the economic recovery in Louisiana; the economic difficulties in central Louisiana; and the state’s new economic development program.
