This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from September 20, 2006, features Craig Freeman leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists about Louisiana's health care system following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. A background report on the topic precedes the discussion. It includes interviews with: United States Senator John Breaux; Dr. John Paige; Thomas Raggio; Dr. Tony Sun; Dr. Fred Lopez; Dr. Fred Cerise; Paul David; Dr. Thomas Ferguson; Dianna Pisanie; and Linda Sharpless. The audience members then discuss their views on the politics surrounding the cost of health care and equitable access to medical records following natural disasters. A panel of experts then joins the audience to answer their questions. The panelists are: Dr. Roxane Townsend of the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals; State Representative Joe Salter; David Hood, Senior Health Care Policy Analyst at the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR); and Julie Cherry, Secretary-Treasurer of Louisiana AFL-CIO. They discuss: access to medical records; proposed legislation to reduce the burden of medical coverage; and emerging technology for improved training in medical schools.
