This episode of the series “Louisiana Public Square” from October 19, 2005, features Craig Freeman leading a discussion between the audience members and panelists on issues related to health care in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. The panelists are: Donald Smithburg, the CEO of the LSU Health Sciences Center and the Charity Hospital System; State Senator Tom Schedler, a member of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee; Dr. Cheryll Bower-Stephens, the Assistant Secretary for the Office of Mental Health at the Department of Health and Hospitals; and Dr. Jimmy Guidry, the State Health Officer. They discuss: their concerns over the availability of health care facilities in the New Orleans area; the need to rebuild a better health care system in the state; the need to provide access to health clinics, especially for the uninsured; their concerns over the lack of functioning sewage treatment plants in New Orleans following the storms; and mental health issues related to the storms.
