This segment from the 2001 Young Heroes Award Ceremony features a profile of honoree Amanda Byers, a senior at Walker High School. Byers has overcome Guillain-Barre Syndrome, an extremely rare disease that attacks the nervous system and causes paralysis. She is an outstanding student and the president of the senior class and Beta Club. She also volunteers at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital and helps raise funds for the American Heart Association, St. Jude’s Hospital, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the United Way.
