Description
This segment from the 2000 Young Heroes Award Ceremony features a profile of honoree Lauren Goins, a senior at St. Mary’s Dominican High School in New Orleans. As a freshman, Goins was forced to become the head of her household after her mother became disabled due to a stroke and brain surgery following a car accident. Her father had already died when she was in elementary school. Despite these personal struggles, Goins maintains a 4.65 grade point average in the advanced honors curriculum at her school and was named a National Merit Commended Scientist. She has also participated in the Internship Entrepreneurship Program at MIT and the Tulane Science Scholars program. Hosts: Ashley Barton and Beth Courtney
