This segment from the 1997 Young Heroes Award Ceremony features a profile of honoree Robert Martin Whatley, a student at Erath High School. Whatley has Werdnig-Hoffman Disease, a form of muscular dystrophy that causes him serious respiratory and motor function problems. Despite these physical challenges, he has a 3.7 grade point average, and is a member of his school’s Beta, Math and Science Clubs, the Quiz Bowl team and yearbook staff. He also serves on a statewide committee to identify the needs of adolescents with developmental disabilities and chronic health care needs. Host: Beth Courtney
