An oral history interview conducted on August 2, 2017, with Philip Monteleone of Hammond, Louisiana. Monteleone served as a Lance Corporal in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He discusses: his decision to enlist in the Marine Corps after high school; his training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California, and at Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina; his deployment to Da Nang, Vietnam as a plane captain of F-4 Phantoms for Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 115 in 1965; the first time that a round went over his head at the air base; returning home with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); the negative treatment of Vietnam veterans when they returned home; his worst memory of the war; the death of his friends John B. McHale and William R. Gendebien; his feelings about the operation of the war; and his advice for young people who are interested in joining the military.
