Description

This segment from the October 6, 2023, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Kara St. Cyr’s report on the growing concerns about saltwater intrusion into the Mississippi River, the drinking water supply for several southern parishes. St. Cyr reports that the drought conditions have weakened the water flow in the Mississippi River allowing saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico to travel upstream. Her report includes highlights of Governor John Bel Edwards discussing the issue at a recent press conference. St. Cyr interviews Mina Seck, the community food manager for Sprout in New Orleans, about her concerns about the impact of the saltwater intrusion on her community garden. She also interviews Heath Jones of the United States Army Corps of Engineers, who discusses their efforts to delay the saltwater intrusion.
