Description

This segment from the September 30, 2022, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Kara St. Cyr and Andre Moreau reporting on literacy in Louisiana. St. Cyr first interviews Joey Waddy, the manager for mental health services for the KIPP Schools in New Orleans. He discusses: their difficulty with teacher retention; student learning loss during the pandemic; and the need to improve students’ reading scores. Moreau then conducts an in-studio interview with Dr. Steven Procopio, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (PAR). He discusses Louisiana’s low literacy rates for K-3 students and State Superintendent of Education Cade Brumley’s proposal to require K-3 students reading below their grade level to attend 30 hours of literacy instruction during the summer.
