This segment from the October 20, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Kelly Spires’ report on the concerns over the spread of invasive species in Louisiana due to Hurricane Harvey. She interviews Matt Neilson of the United States Geological Survey (USGS), who discusses his creation of a map tracking the spread of these invasive species since the storm. Spires also interviews William Kelso, an aquatic ecologist at LSU, who discusses the impact of giant salvinia, water hyacinth, hydrilla, and Asian carp on Louisiana watersheds, as well as the state’s work in fighting the spread of these invasive species.
