This segment from the June 23, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Kevin Gautreaux’s report on the work of the General Claire Chennault Flying Tigers chapter of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in Monroe. He interviews Bill Jameson, the DAV Louisiana Veteran of the Year, who discusses his experience of being spit on after he returned home from the Vietnam War, his reaction to being named Veteran of the Year, and the changing attitudes towards veterans since Vietnam. Gautreaux also interviews Michael Shaw, the founder of the chapter, who discusses why he started the chapter and their work in helping veterans in northeast Louisiana. He also interviews Nell Chennault Calloway, the director of the Chennault Aviation and Military Museum and the granddaughter of General Claire Chennault, who discusses her reaction to Shaw naming the DAV chapter after her grandfather and their ongoing support of the museum. Lastly, Gautreaux interviews Randall Rugg, a Marine veteran, who discusses the importance of the chapter’s new shuttle service to the VA Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi, for veterans who live in northeast Louisiana.
