This segment from the June 16, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Tika Laudun’s report on the efforts of the people of Thibodaux to locate the remains and honor the victims of the 1887 Thibodaux Massacre. She interviews John Desantis, the author of “The Thibodaux Massacre: Racial Violence and the 1887 Sugar Cane Labor Strike,” who discusses the events that led up to the massacre, the two-hour shooting spree by white vigilantes against unarmed African Americans and their families, and the story of Jack Conrad, who was wounded during the massacre. Laudun also interviews Sylvester Jackson, the great grandson of Jack Conrad, and Denis Gaubert, a former Camp Commander with the Sons of Confederate Veterans. Host: Andre Moreau
