Description

This segment from the June 9, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Quint Forgey’s recap of the ninth and final week of the 2017 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. These stories include: the failure of the House and Senate to reach a compromise on the state budget before the end of the session, which prompted the start of a special session; State Representative Cameron Henry, the chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, urging House members to reject the Senate amendments to the state budget; a press conference with Governor John Bel Edwards discussing the failure of leadership by the House Republicans; State Representative Sam Jones speaking about the Legislature’s failure to address the 2018 fiscal cliff; and State Representative Tanner Magee urging the passage of the bipartisan criminal justice reform package. Host Andre Moreau then conducts an in-studio interview with Julia O’Donogue of Nola.com/The Times-Picayune and Melinda Deslatte of the Associated Press. They discuss: their reaction to the end of the regular session; the passage of the criminal justice reform package; the philosophical differences within the House and between the Senate and the House; and the upcoming special session.
