This segment from the January 6, 2017, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s report on the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority’s release of the 2017 draft of the state’s coastal restoration master plan. Whinham interviews Windell Curole, the general manager of the South Lafourche Levee District, who discusses: the extent of the coastal land loss in South Lafourche Parish; the inexact science of coastal restoration; the impossibility of completely restoring the coast; and the state’s goal of managing the continuing land loss. Whinham and Curole also tour a successful coastal restoration project along the levee in Galliano, where the Levee District rebuilt 120 acres of marsh land. Whinham also conducts an in-studio interview with Bren Haase, the lead researcher for the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA). Haase discusses: CPRA’s successful coastal restoration projects since 2007; the relative sea level rise along the coast; their sediment diversion projects; and the upcoming public hearings on the 2017 draft of the coastal master plan.
