This segment from the November 4, 2016, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s report on the disposal of M6 propellant at Camp Minden in Webster Parish. Whinham reports on the timeline of events related to the M6 disposal, including: the discovery that the M6 propellant was improperly stored by a private contractor following an explosion in October 2012; the community’s negative response to the National Guard’s plan to dispose of the propellant in an open burn in 2014; the subsequent open dialogue between the community, National Guard, and EPA in order to find another solution; and the approval of a plan to burn the M6 propellant in a closed container system. He interviews: Ron Hagar, the chair of the Camp Minden Citizens Advisory Board; Dr. Brian Salvatore, a chemistry professor at LSU-Shreveport; Wilma Subra, an environmental chemist; Jason Poe, the Vice President of Explosive Services International; and Dean Schellhase, the project manager. Whinham also tours the closed container system with Hagar, Dr. Salvatore, and Poe. This segment is a part of the Veterans Coming Home Initiative.
