Description

This segment from the March 20, 2015, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s report on the possible impact of the Jindal Administration’s proposed budget cuts to health care. Sanford reports that the current state budget proposal cuts $165 million to hospitals and $7.7 million to community clinics. Her report touches on the closure of the emergency room at the Baton Rouge General Hospital’s Mid-City location and includes highlights of Father Rick Andrus and State Senator Yvonee Dorsey-Colomb speaking at a rally at the State Capitol against the closure. Sanford also interviews Susan Todd, the executive director of 504 HealthNet, which runs clinics in the New Orleans area. Charlie Whinham and Shauna Sanford then conduct an in-studio interview with Don Gregory of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana and Steve Spires of the Louisiana Budget Project. They discuss: the potential cuts to health care; the contingencies in the state budget; the impact of the cuts on federal funding; and the closure of the emergency at the Baton Rouge General Hospital’s Mid-City location.
