This segment from the February 13, 2015, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s report on the impact and cultural traditions of the Italian-Americans who settled in Louisiana. He interviews Frank Maselli, the chairman of the American Italian Cultural Center in New Orleans, who discusses the high percentage of Sicilians who came to America through the Port of New Orleans and settled in south Louisiana. Whinham’s report also touches on: the tradition of the St. Joseph’s Altars; the Madonna Chapel in Bayou Goula; the town of Independence, known as the Little Italy of Louisiana; and the replica of an Italian piazza located next to the American Italian Cultural Center in New Orleans.
