This segment from the June 28, 2013, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s report on the United States Supreme Court’s ruling that it is not unreasonable for police officers to swab the DNA of someone who is arrested for a serious crime. Sanford reports that Louisiana has been collecting the DNA of anyone arrested for a felony since 2003. She also reports that the DNA is analyzed at the State Police Crime Lab and entered into the FBI’s CODIS database. Sanford interviews: Marjorie Esman, the executive director of the Louisiana ACLU; Pete Adams, the executive director of the Louisiana District Attorneys Association; and Sergeant J.B. Slaton of the Louisiana State Police.
