This segment from the March 29, 2013, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford leading a panel discussion on the role religion should play in shaping public policy. The panelists are: Rabbi Thomas Gardner of the Beth Shalom Synagogue; Reverend Lee Wesley of the Community Bible Baptist Church; Bishop Cynthia Harvey of the Louisiana United Methodist Church; and Father John Carville, a retired Vicar General with the Diocese of Baton Rouge. They discuss: their opposition to Governor Bobby Jindal’s tax reform plan, which eliminates personal and corporate income taxes and raises the sales tax; the negative impact of the plan on poor and middle income residents; their decision to speak out; the role of the religious community in shaping public policy; and the their view of the potential rebate for the poor.
