This segment from the July 13, 2012, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham and Shauna Sanford leading a panel discussion on the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Louisiana. A background report on the topic, including interviews with HIV patient Millicent Foster and Ashante Legard of Family Service of Greater Baton Rouge, precedes the discussion. The panelists are: Dr. Rani Whitfield, a family medicine and sports physician; Louise Bienvenu of AIDS Law Louisiana; and Reverend A.J. Johnson, the founder of the Baton Rouge AIDS Society. They discuss: AIDS as a preventable disease; the need for education and public awareness of the epidemic; the work of the Baton Rouge AIDS Society and AIDS Law Louisiana; the high rate of HIV/AIDS in the African American community; discrimination cases; the Intentional Exposure Law; and the potential impact of the new at-home HIV/AIDs test.
