This segment from the April 13, 2012, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Sue Lincoln’s report on the impact of the new school choice law on the state’s school desegregation cases. Lincoln reports that more than half of Louisiana’s school districts have federal desegregation cases. She interviews State Representative Jeff Thompson, who discusses his concerns about the impact of the law on the Bossier Parish school desegregation cases and his hope that the law will ultimately lead to the end of some of these cases. Lincoln also interviews Dr. Carl Bankston, the chairman of the Sociology Department at Tulane University, who discusses the high cost of desegregation cases, the conflicts between the cases and the school choice law, and the existing issues with establishing charter schools in the impacted school districts.
