This segment from the March 16, 2012, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Sue Lincoln’s report on the first day of testimony on Governor Bobby Jindal’s controversial education reform plan at the 2012 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Lincoln reports that the House Education Committee heard testimony for 11 hours on a bill expanding the state’s school voucher program. This report includes: highlights from the protest held by teachers and parents on the steps of the State Capitol; interviews with teachers Daryl Roberson, Destiny Cooper, and Durlin Ancelet on why they are protesting the bill; State Representatives Nancy Landry, Pat Smith, and Alfred Williams of the House Education Committee debating Landry’s procedural motion for the testimony; testimony by Governor Bobby Jindal; an interview with BESE Board member Jim Garvey on why he supports the bill; and interviews with Steve Monaghan of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers and Christy Cormier, a Lake Charles parent, on why they disagree with the bill.
