Description

This segment from the August 5, 2011, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Sue Lincoln’s report on the findings of a study by the Education Trust on the impact of the high cost of tuition at colleges and universities on students from low income families. Lincoln reports that the Education Trust report only analyzed federal Pell Grant data and did not take into account state scholarship programs. This report includes: an interview with Dr. Jim Purcell, the Commissioner of Higher Education, on the low cost of tuition in Louisiana in comparison to other Southern states; testimony by Phyllis Taylor, the president of the Patrick F. Taylor Foundation, and Governor Bobby Jindal on the TOPS Scholarship Program; an interview with David Roberts of the Office of Student Financial Assistance on the Go Grant scholarships for low income students; and Dr. Michael Martin, the Chancellor of LSU, discussing the Pelican Promise, a program that helps low income students with tuition and fees. Hosts: Shauna Sanford and Charlie Whinham
