This segment from the June 3, 2011, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Jeremy Alford’s report on a new map created by the USGS National Wetlands Research Center in Lafayette, which illustrates the Louisiana coastal wetlands losses and gains from 1932-2010. Alford reports that the map does not include the impact of the 2010 BP Oil Spill. This report includes: highlights from Phil Turnipseed and Brady Couvillion’s presentation of the map to the Joint Natural Resources Committee of the Louisiana Legislature, including their hope that the map will help in the planning of coastal restoration activities; State Representative Jerry Gisclair discussing the anecdotal evidence of coastal land loss by a 95-year-old trapper in Larose; and an interview with Turnipseed on the Center’s research into the impact of the BP Oil Spill.
