This segment from the May 20, 2011, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Liz Barnes and Christina Melton’s report on the scientific research taking place during the historically high Mississippi River levels. They interview: Colonel Ed Fleming of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the historic opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway and the Morganza Spillway at the same time; Brian Vosburg of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority on the historic opportunity to perform research on how the Mississippi River dumps sediment and the impact of diverting the river on the downstream channels; and Daniel Kroes and Charles Demas of the USGS on the threat of invasive species entering the Gulf of Mexico.
