Description
This segment from the August 14, 2009, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Charlie Whinham’s visit to the Kisatchie and Catahoula districts of the Kisatchie National Forest. He talks to Kisatchie district ranger Mike Dawson and public affairs officer Jim Caldwell about the forest, the role of forester Caroline Dorman in preserving the forest, the efforts of the Civilian Conservation Corps in re-planting the longleaf pine trees, and the forest serving as a habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker. Whinham also speaks to Catahoula district ranger Rodney Stone about the fishing available at Stuart Lake and the forest serving as the home of Camp Livingston and the Louisiana Maneuvers of 1940-1941, wartime maneuvers held before the United States entered World War II.
