Description
This segment from the July 31, 2009, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Shauna Sanford’s interview with Congressman Charles Boustany about the health care reform bill being debated in the House of Representatives. Boustany has 20 years of experience as a physician. He discusses: the importance of health care; his view that the current bill does not go far enough in cutting costs while maintaining the quality of care; concerns about the bill from both Republicans and Democrats; the Republican view of improving the existing system instead of disrupting the system with government intervention; his view that the critical problems that need to be addressed in the bill are transparency in the insurance system and improving the doctor-patient relationship; the current bill hurting access to health care in rural communities; and the main concerns of his constituents, including diminishing access to the doctor of their choice and increasing government interference that affects their health care choices.
