This segment from the October 3, 2008, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Liz Barnes following members of the USDA Forest Service teams as they use GPS technology and laptops to assess the massive tree damage sustained in Baton Rouge due to Hurricane Gustav. She talks to Malhon Doucet of the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry, Stephen Shurtz, a Baton Rouge Forestry Manager, Dudley Hartel of Urban Forestry South, and Paul Revell of the Virginia Department of Forestry about Baton Rouge’s estimated loss of 3%-5% of its tree canopy and the work of the assessment teams.
