This segment from the “Katrina and Rita: A Year of Recovery” special from August 25, 2006, features Robyn Ekings’ report on the new building codes passed by the Louisiana Legislature following Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. She talks to State Representative Gil Pinac about the importance of the new building codes in protecting families and the estimates for the increased costs to homeowners. Ekings also tours a construction site in St. John the Baptist Parish with Randy Noel, the president of the Louisiana Homebuilders Association, to see a demonstration of the new requirements. Lastly, Ekings talks to Mark Levitan, the director of the LSU Hurricane Center, about the effect of wind and flood damage on homes and why the new building codes are necessary.
