This segment from the December 16, 2005, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Randy LaBauve’s report on the mental health services available to victims of Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita. LaBauve interviews: Dr. Cheryll Bowers-Stephens of the Louisiana Office of Mental Health; Joan Lisso Rogers, a social worker from New Orleans working in Baton Rouge; Dr. David Post of the Capital Area Human Services District; Aristide Oconostota Marshall, a displaced New Orleans pastor; and Dr. Ronald Elesh of the LSU School of Psychiatry. They discuss: the millions of Louisianans in need of crisis counseling; the need to overcome the stigma attached to seeking professional mental health; the Office of Mental Health’s focus on suicide prevention and depression; and the counselors’ use of a positive psychological approach in dealing with their patients.
