Description
This segment from the September 23, 2005, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Robyn Ekings' visit to a long-term shelter for Hurricane Katrina evacuees in Monroe, the first long-term shelter ever operated by the American Red Cross. Ekings tours the facility with Dan Hartman of the American Red Cross and talks to him about the set-up of the shelter and the services available to its residents. She also interviews Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo about the shelter and its positive economic impact on the city due to the influx of volunteers and evacuees. Ekings also speaks to storm survivors Jerry “J.C.” Magee and Olibra Magee of Plaquemines Parish about their first trip home since Hurricane Katrina, living in the shelter, and being homesick.
