This segment from the September 9, 2005, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features producer Christina Melton’s report on the effect of Hurricane Katrina on the children evacuated from the storm. She talks to Bethany Murray, a psychiatric nurse and volunteer at the Baton Rouge River Center shelter, about the groups of children arriving at the shelter without knowing where there parents are and the shelter’s plans to set up a charter school for the evacuated children. Melton also reports on the efforts of the Center for Missing and Exploited Children and the Red Cross to reunite lost children with their families. She then interviews Dr. Denise Sellers, a child psychologist, about strategies that parents can use in order to help their children deal with the stress caused by Hurricane Katrina and the possible behaviors that their children may exhibit in the coming weeks. This report also includes an interview with United States Senator Mary Landrieu discussing the need for evacuated children to be enrolled in schools outside of their home parishes.
