Description
This segment from the February 20, 1998, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Jeff Duhe’s report on the national debate on the future of Social Security and Medicare. His report includes highlights of a field hearing of the National Medicare Commission, a 16-member bipartisan committee chaired by United States Senator John Breaux, held at the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge. It includes comments by: Senator Breaux; Nancy-Ann Min Deparle, administrator with the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA); and Jeanette Takamura, assistant secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. Duhe also interviews Senator Breaux and Social Security Commissioner Ken Apfel. They discuss the goals of the National Medicare Commission; the projected fall-out date for Social Security in 2029; and the possible options to stabilize both programs.
