Description

This segment from the January 23, 1998, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Diana Baker’s report on the destruction caused by Formosan termites in South Louisiana, including churches, schools, and historic buildings in the French Quarter in New Orleans. Baker reports that the Formosan termites have been spotted as far north as Ouachita Parish. She interviews: Sister Susan Kienzler, Ursuline nun; Al Hennesy, church historian; Marc Cooper, Vieux Carre Commission; Ed Bordes, New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control; Rick Legendre, aide to Congressman Bob Livingston; and Dr. Greg Henderson, LSU researcher. Host Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with Alan Lax of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Mayor Dudley Dixon of Westlake. They discuss: the Formosan termite warning signs; the options available for treating the termites; and the new federal grant to study the problem. Host: Robert Collins
