Description
This segment from the October 3, 1997, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Arcie Chapa’s report on the findings of a recent United States Department of Justice report on the rampant violence at the state’s four juvenile detention centers. Her report includes highlights of Secretary Richard Stalder of the Louisiana Department of Corrections testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Project Zero Tolerance, a project aimed at reducing violence at the facilities. Chapa also visits Jetson Correctional Center in East Baton Rouge Parish to learn more about the success of Project Zero Tolerance at their facility. She interviews warden Elijah Lewis and Dr. Cecile Guin of the LSU School of Social Work. Host Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with Secretary Richard Stalder of the Louisiana Department of Corrections. He discusses his response to recent reports by the Department of Justice and the Louisiana Legislative Auditor and the impact of Project Zero Tolerance.
