Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from September 26, 1997, features Arcie Chapa and Jeff Duhe reporting on the health of Lake Pontchartrain six months after the opening of the Bonnet Carre Spillway. Chapa first reports on the impact of the opening of the spillway on fisheries. She interviews: Carol Rotolo, commercial shrimper; Bruce Baird, United States Army Corps of Engineers; Neil Armingeon, the environmental director for the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation; Pete Gerica, the president of the Lake Pontchartrain Fishermen’s’ Association; and George Barisich, the president of the United Commercial Fishermen Association. Duhe then reports on the environmental health of Lake Pontchartrain. Duhe reports on several causes of pollution in Lake Pontchartrain, including an algae bloom caused by the opening of the spillway, urban runoff, and agricultural waste. He interviews: Dr. Eugene Turner, coastal ecologist; Dr. Quay Dortch, marine biologist; Kenny Campo, commercial fisherman; Cliff Glockner, commercial fisherman; Cliff Kenwood, researcher; and Carlton Dufrechou, the president of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation.
