This segment from the May 16, 1997, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Arcie Chapa’s report on the change in management for the state’s Charity Hospital System from the Louisiana Health Care Authority to the LSU Medical School. She visits the busy and cramped emergency room at Big Charity Hospital in New Orleans and interviews: Dr. Lala Dunbar, ER doctor; Dr. Robert Marier, the dean of the LSU Medical School and Governor Foster’s appointee as the head of the Charity Hospital System; and Dr. Kennon Buechter, ER doctor. Host Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with State Representative Charles Riddle, the author of a constitutional amendment related to the management of the Charity Hospital System, and Cary Dougherty, the director of the Louisiana Health Care Authority.
