This segment from the February 4, 1994, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Arcie Chapa’s report on Governor Edwin Edwards announcing a new initiative to curb hazardous waste importation and clean up inactive and abandoned hazardous waste sites around the state. Chapa reports that Governor Edwards is proposing an increase in the hazardous waste disposal tax and a $2 per ton tax on hazardous waste generated in the state. She interviews: Dan Borne, Louisiana Chemical Association; Bob Kuehn, Tulane Environmental Law Clinic; and Mary Lee Orr, Louisiana Environmental Action Network. Host Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with the new secretary of the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), Bill Kucharski. He discusses: the compliance of industry; the lawsuit against Marine Shale; and the state’s plan to clean up hazardous waste.
