Description
This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from May 8, 1992, features Robert Collins, Arcie Chapa, and Jeff Duhe reporting on the sixth week of the 1992 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Chapa first reports on Governor Edwin Edwards testifying before the Senate Education Committee on his education package, including a new teacher evaluation program and an increase to the Minimum Foundation Program. Her report also includes highlights of a press conference with Governor Edwards and Mark Drennen of the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR). She also interviews: Fred Skelton of the Louisiana Federation of Teachers (LFT); Linda Day of the Louisiana Association of Educators (LAE); and State Superintendent of Education Raymond Arveson. Duhe then reports on the other action at the session, including: an interview with State Representative Melissa Flournoy on her sex education bill; an interview with State Representative Chuck McMains on his bill banning contracts between state officials and state agencies; State Representative Sherman Copelin questioning State Representative Jim Donelon on his bill adding judges to the state ethics code; an interview with lobbyist Ann Stehr on her concerns about the budget cuts to domestic violence programs; and State Representative Vic Stelly discussing his bill raising the minimum driving age to 16. Next, Chapa reports on the Senate passing a bill strengthening the regulation of day care centers and prohibiting corporal punishment. She interviews: Sharon Matto, mother; State Senator Lomax Jordan; State Senator Diana Bajoie; Nina King, St. Aloysius Day Care; Charlamaine Boyce, Bright Ideas Day Care; Denise Curwick, Southside Day Care; and State Senator Randy Ewing. Lastly, Duhe reports on the Edwards Administration eliminating the budget for LUMCON, the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, in their state budget proposal. He interviews: Nancy Rabalais, marine ecologist; Dr. Quay Dortch, biochemist; Mike Dagg, oceanographer; Paul Sammarco, director of LUMCON; Sammie Cosper of the Board of Regents; and Steve Rabalais, marine operations.
