This segment from the April 3, 1992, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Robert Collins, Arcie Chapa, and Jeff Duhe reporting on the first week of the 1992 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Collins first reports on Governor Edwin Edwards and United States Deputy Secretary of Agriculture signing an agreement to add Louisiana to the President’s Rural Initiative Program. Chapa then reports on the reaction to Governor Edwards’ opening address to the Legislature. Her report includes interviews with: Mark Drennen of the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR); State Representative Kip Holden; State Representative Raymond Jetson; and Linda Day of the Louisiana Association of Educators (LAE). Next, Duhe reports on Shreveport’s legislative priorities. He interviews: Jo Rose, the city’s lobbyist; Mark Garrett of the Chamber of Commerce; and Caddo Parish Sheriff Don Hathaway. Collins then reports on some of the bills filed at the session. Lastly, Chapa reports on the reapportionment bill approved by the Senate and Governmental Affairs Committee creating a new minority-majority Congressional district and splitting Baton Rouge into three Congressional districts. She interviews: State Senator Cleo Fields; State Senator Dennis Bagneris; State Senator Charles D. Jones; Baton Rouge Mayor Tom Ed McHugh; and State Representative Peppi Bruneau. Her report also includes highlights of a press conference with Governor Edwards discussing his support for the bill.
