This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from April 26, 1991, features Robert Collins, Karen Nachman, and Jeff Duhe reporting on the second week of the 1991 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Collins first reports on the week’s headlines. These stories include: an interview with Governor Buddy Roemer on the death of State Senator Jack Doland at age 63; an interview with State Senator Ken Osterberger on his decision to retire; Attorney General William Guste discussing his plan to petition the United States Supreme Court in order to be named as the official legal representative for the State of Louisiana in the college desegregation case; and Governor Roemer signing the oil spill response bill into law. Duhe then reports on the abortion bills under consideration at the session and the split between pro-life factions on the bills. He interviews: State Senator Allen Bares; Leslie Gerwin of the Coalition for Reproductive Freedom; Dr. Wallace Begneaud, obstetrician; Basile Uddo of the Loyola School of Law; John Devlin of the LSU School of Law; and Terri Bartlett of Louisiana Planned Parenthood. Next, Nachman reports on a meeting of the new Louisiana Democratic Leadership Council in Baton Rouge.
