This segment from the February 8, 1991, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Jeff Duhe’s report on the success of Northdale Magnet Academy in Baton Rouge, an alternative high school for high school dropouts and potential dropouts, which offers counseling services and vocational education. He interviews: Leroy Hilire, principal; Sheryl Lewis, counselor; Bob Neese, East Baton Rouge Parish Schools; and Luke Chiniche and Connie Barnes of the at-risk program. Robert Collins then leads a panel discussion with State Senator Larry Bankston, Emogene Pliner of the Public Affairs Research Council (PAR), and Richard Thompson of the Louisiana Department of Education. They discuss the importance of identifying at-risk students at an early age, the available programs to help these students, the state’s high school dropout rate, and Governor Buddy Roemer’s grade on education.
