This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from January 18, 1991, features a special report on the beginning of the Persian Gulf War between Iraq and the United Nations. Karen Nachman first reports on people’s reactions to the start of the war and the economic impact of the war on the oil industry. She interviews: Larry Wall of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association; Dr. Loren Scott, LSU economist; and Governor Buddy Roemer. Next, Jeff Duhe reports on the events that led to the start of the war. His report also includes footage of an anti-war demonstration in New Orleans. He interviews: Dr. Lawrence Katzenstein, UNO; Dr. Mark Gasiorowski, LSU; Father Douglas Dousan of St. Joseph the Worker Church in Marrero; United States Senator John Breaux; General Ansel Stroud of the Louisiana National Guard; and Sister Julie Cutter. Robert Collins then leads a panel discussion with: Dr. Dr. Mark Gasiorowski, a Middle East expert at LSU; Dr. Kevin Mulcahy, a political science professor at LSU; and Larry Wall of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association. They discuss the war and its impact on oil prices. Lastly, Nachman interviews Governor Buddy Roemer, who discusses his views on the war, his support for the troops, and the need for a national energy policy.
