This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from June 8, 1990, features Robert Collins, Karen Nachman, and Jeff Duhe reporting on the eighth week of the 1990 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Collins first reports on the indictment of Insurance Commissioner Doug Green by a federal grand jury in New Orleans on charges of mail fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy, including the reactions of Commissioner Green and Governor Buddy Roemer. Next, Nachman reports on the House passing the $8.6 billion state budget. She interviews: State Representative Quentin Dastugue; State Representative Charles D. Jones; State Representative Garey Forster; Governor Roemer; State Representative John Alario; State Representative Raymond Laborde; and State Representative Bo Ackal. Duhe then reports on the House Criminal Justice hearing on a bill restricting abortion. His report includes comments by State Senator Mike Cross, State Representative Woody Jenkins, and State Senator Cleo Fields. He also interviews: Brenda Desormeaux of Louisiana Right to Life; Terri Bartlett of Louisiana Planned Parenthood; Robin Rothrock of the Louisiana League of Women Voters; and Clare Smith of Catholic Family Life Center. Next, Nachman reports on other legislative news, including: an interview with Governor Roemer on a bill consolidating the state’s four higher education boards; Governor Roemer testifying in the House Health and Welfare on a bill reforming the Charity Hospital System; and an interview with State Representative Raymond Laborde on his Charity Hospital bill. Lastly, Duhe reports on the proposed funding for a bill modeled after the Taylor plan, which provides college scholarships to low income students.
