Description

This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from May 4, 1990, features Robert Collins and Jeff Duhe reporting on the 1990 U.S. Senate election and the ongoing 1990 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature. Duhe first previews the Senate election between 18-year incumbent J. Bennett Johnston (D), State Senator Ben Bagert (R), and State Representative David Duke (R). He interviews: Ed Renwick, a pollster at Loyola University; State Senator Ben Bagert; United States Senator J. Bennett Johnston; State Representative David Duke; James McPherson, NAAWP lawyer; Gus Weill, political consultant; State Representative Alphonse Jackson; State Representative Bo Ackal; and Billy Nungesser, chairman of the Louisiana Republican Party. Collins then leads a panel discussion with three journalists: Ed Anderson of the New Orleans Times-Picayune; Steve Watsky of United Press International; and John Maginnis of Gris Gris Magazine. They discuss the Senate race and the ongoing 1990 legislative session, including Governor Buddy Roemer’s difficulty in working with state legislators and the likelihood that an anti-abortion bill will pass.
