Karen Nachman first reports on the major issues of the legislative session, including the $750 million state budget deficit, abortion, higher education, a statewide lottery, and gambling. She interviews: State Senator Mike Cross; State Senator Hank Lauricella; State Senator J.E. Jumonville; State Representative Robert Adley; State Representative Bo Ackal; Mark Drennen, the president of the Public Affairs Research Council of Louisiana (PAR); and State Senator Oswald Decuir. Robert Collins then moderates a panel discussion with P.J. Mills, the chief of staff to Governor Buddy Roemer, State Senator Mike Foster, and Jim Tucker, a municipal credit analyst with Howard Weil in New Orleans. They discuss: the state budget deficit; proposed taxes, including changes to the sales tax and the homestead exemption; and the impact of the state budget debate on the bond market.
