This episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” from March 2, 1990, focuses on the outlook for the oil industry in Louisiana. First, Jeff Duhe reports on the optimism for growth in the oil industry in Lafayette with the price of oil at $20 a barrel. He interviews: David Manuel, the dean of business administration at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (USL); Margaret O’Donnell, an economic analyst at USL; Frank Bonner, the manager of the Hydril Company; and Gene Graves, the vice president of PHI. Robert Collins then moderates a panel discussion with: Jim Porter, the president of the Louisiana Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association; Ron Gomez, secretary of the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources; and Dr. Jim Richardson, an economist at LSU and a member of the Louisiana Revenue Estimating Conference. They discuss: the state of oil production in Louisiana; the bright future for natural gas; the impact of the oil industry on the state budget; and how to encourage more oil exploration in the state.
