This segment from the December 15, 1989, episode of the series “Louisiana: The State We’re In” features Jeff Duhe’s report on Tulane University researchers developing a vaccine against a strain of AIDS in monkeys and the possibility of an AIDS vaccine for humans. He interviews: Dr. Peter Gerone, the director of the Delta Primate Center in Covington; Dr. Billie Davison-Fairburn, clinical veterinarian at Tulane; Dr. Michael Murphey-Corb, research scientist at Tulane; and Dr. Mitchell Rice, LSU public policy professor. Host Robert Collins then conducts an in-studio interview with Dr. Louise McFarland, the chief epidemiologist with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. She discusses: the implications of the Tulane research for humans; the timeline for a possible vaccine; and the state’s work with AIDS patients.
